Short introduction

Guna Milan evaluates eight traditional compatibility factors, known as Kootas. Each factor examines a different area of relationship compatibility. Their conventional point allocations add to 36 in the traditional Gun Milan or Ashtakoota system.

What it means

The customary allocation is Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7, and Nadi 8. A full score means the pair matched fully under that factor's prescribed table; partial points show a partial table result; zero points show no points under that specific comparison.

Why it matters

The total provides a compact reference, but it hides important differences. Two totals can be similar while the contributing factors differ. The score does not rank people and does not determine whether a marriage is appropriate.

How to use it practically

Read the total, then inspect each factor. Ask which areas deserve discussion and which traditional categories need wider context. Use the complete guide and exceptions and mitigating factors before drawing conclusions.

KP or Vedic context

The 36-point total is a Vedic Ashtakoota convention. It is not a KP score, a percentage of relationship success, or a substitute for broader chart and life context.

Common mistakes

Do not treat a high score as a guarantee or a low score as rejection. Do not adjust the recorded base total informally because of an exception; contextual reviews should be explained separately.

Safe note

A score out of 36 does not provide timing, remedies, medical guidance, or certainty about a relationship. Practical compatibility and mutual care cannot be reduced to points.
